Community Building Through the Arts and Awareness of Pesticide Free Environments.

On June 14, the Calgary community joined local artist, Audrya Corbett, in painting a 30ft mandala onto the roadway. Located in the intersection of 5Ast and 3rd Ave N.W., this community mandala was be apart of the Healthy Park campaign. New Edinborough Park is Calgary's first pesticide-free park and the campaign encourages that all of Calgary be pesticide-free by 2009.

This mandala project was a day-long celebration of arts and culture. The community was invited to paint in an outlined mandala, designed by Audrya Corbett, with non-toxic paints. In Sanskrit, “mandala” means both circle and centre, implying that is represents both the visible world outside of us (the circle) and the invisible one deep inside our minds and bodies (the centre). Mandalas are created in cultures around the world to bring community together and celebrate life.

Local artist, Audrya Corbett has been creating mandalas in various community's for eight years and is excited about expanding the awareness of pesticide free environments through this project. Corbett was a awarded the “Take Action Grant” funded by Arusha and Calgary Dollars. She is an Alberta College of Art and Design alumni, and has been expressing her artistic talents as a Guest Artist in many of the schools in Calgary.
